The Opportunity

We are seeking an Assistant In-House Counsel to navigate the dynamic intersection of law, compliance, and the insurance industry. In this role, you will collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Risk, Underwriting, Customer Success, Marketing, and Corporate Development teams to ensure legal compliance while aligning legal strategies with broader business objectives. This position also provides unique exposure to an innovative and evolving industry, offering valuable opportunities for professional growth.

Location

This is a hybrid position based out of New York.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, analyze and ensure the Company’s compliance with applicable insurance laws and regulations, industry standards and best practices.
  • Work cross-functionally with the Risk, Underwriting and Customer Success departments to provide legal guidance in underwriting and claims processes. This includes responding to internal and external questions concerning claims processing, underwriting and application of policy terms.
  • Assist in the strategic development and deployment of insurance products.
  • Review and respond to regulatory inquiries.
  • Maintain insurance producer licenses for entity, individual agents/brokers, and claim adjusters.
  • Supervise continued education requirements of licensed personnel through third-party providers.
  • Navigate cross-discipline and cross-industry questions addressing landlord-tenant law and insurance regulations.
  • Develop internal programs and resources, including training materials for various departments regarding compliance, best practices, and risk management.
  • Conduct regular reviews of internal policies, procedures and processes to ensure alignment with applicable laws and regulations and industry standards.
  • Contribute to designing and executing compliance testing and monitoring programs.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive compliance reports to senior management, highlighting concerns, recommendations, and progress on compliance initiatives.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing department to ensure all advertising and marketing materials comply with applicable laws, regulations and internal policies.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to address and remediate compliance-related issues and findings.
  • Assist Chief Information Security Officer concerning NY Part 500 compliance, SOC II observations, and responding to due diligence inquiries.
  • Support Product and Technology teams in navigating consumer protections, industry standards, and best practices in deployment of insurance products and SaaS platforms.
  • As required, assist in the negotiation, drafting, and review of contracts (MSA’s, Program Administrator Agreements, claim engagements, vendor contracts, partner agreements, etc.) to support time-sensitive sales and operations matters.
  • The position will directly report to the Head of the Legal and collaborate extensively with leadership of multiple teams including Risk, Underwriting, Customer Success, Marketing and Corporate Development departments.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal/compliance department (preferred experience from an insurance carrier, MGA, or agent/broker), or government experience at a department of insurance.
  • NY Bar license or ability to satisfy NY In-House Registration requirements.
  • Property and casualty insurance license preferred; CPCU certification desirable.
  • Strong understanding of insurance regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, developing risk management strategies and implementing control frameworks.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal), capable of presenting findings and recommendations to various audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Passion for insurance and ability to synthesize federal, state, and local statutes and regulations.

Base Salary

The base salary range is between $180,000 - $215,000 annually.

Base salary does not include other forms of compensation or benefits. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, location and current market data and may vary from the range above.
