Impact of a Senior Manager, Engineering

As a Senior Manager of Software Engineering, you lead a dedicated team focusing on the delivery and quality of key Upsun features and services. You are responsible for growing and supporting a team of engineers, shaping team strategy, and evolving engineering practices in close collaboration with peers across the company. By building and improving the processes that support the entire software development lifecycle—from design to deployment—you help define the future of software development at Upsun.

Your leadership ensures that products are robust, development cycles are efficient, and teams are set up to scale, directly driving the innovation and success of our engineering organization.

What to expect

• Oversee day-to-day engineering operations: Manage development sprints, code reviews, and deployment cycles to ensure consistent progress.
• Collaborate across teams: Work closely with Product Management, UX/Design, SRE, and Data teams to foster a culture of product excellence and mutual respect.
• Deploy and maintain engineering systems: Take charge of development tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring solutions to support quality and speed.
• Lead innovation and technology assessment: Assess new technologies and lead forward-thinking software architecture and development strategies.
• Drive project delivery: Lead software projects from initiation to completion, focusing on feature quality, timely delivery, and operational readiness.
• Build and grow your team: Attract, retain, and nurture a standout engineering team while defining clear goals and a collaborative culture.
• Enable agile feedback loops: Establish swift feedback loops with business and product teams to ensure efficient feature iteration.
• Manage external partnerships: Cultivate connections with external partners and vendors to align with product development priorities.
• Maintain a hands-on approach: Stay up to date with current development practices and leverage AI to support your work.

What you bring

• Software engineering leadership and strategy: Over 5 years of experience leading teams with a proven success in driving feature initiatives and communicating across a company.
• Operational expertise: Extensive experience in day-to-day development operations and creating strategies that align with business goals.
• Backend/Full-Stack proficiency: Hands-on experience with modern software architecture, microservices, and API design.
• Programming skills: Proficiency in Go, Python, or comparable modern languages for building robust, scalable applications and infrastructure.
• Communication and collaboration: Excellent skills in working with diverse, global teams and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to stakeholders.
• Team leadership and mentoring: A passion for guiding both individual contributors and leaders within a diverse engineering organization.
• Cloud infrastructure and Linux Systems knowledge: Experience with GCP, AWS, or Azure, container orchestration using Kubernetes for scaling and deployment, and administration of applications within Linux environments.
• Specialized experience: Familiarity with distributed systems, high-traffic applications, and standards like GDPR, PCI, or SOC2.
