AI Application Engineer – Mental Health Tech (Berlin)
About us
Aumio develops digital products for mental health and wellbeing. We're currently building Ally – an AI-powered stress coaching app that will reach millions through German health insurance. We're a small, experienced team on a clear mission: building AI that genuinely helps people manage stress and build mental strength.
What you'll build
Production-grade LLM systems that support real conversations about mental health. This means:
Designing conversation flows that feel natural, not robotic
Building RAG pipelines that retrieve the right knowledge at the right time
Implementing safety systems that catch risks before they reach users
Optimizing for performance and cost without sacrificing quality
Supporting backend infrastructure (FastAPI, Docker, Render) as needed
You'll work alongside Matthias (Lead AI Engineer) on architecture and deployment. We look for someone who spots problems before they're assigned, proposes solutions without prompting, and drives technical decisions independently.
What you bring
Technical foundation:
Strong Python and production LLM experience
Track record shipping AI systems that people actually use
Comfortable with backend services, APIs, and deployment
2+ years of relevant work experience
Nice-to-haves: DevOps, FastAPI, Flutter, conversational AI, health tech compliance
What matters most:
Intelligent problem-solving – You break down complex challenges, evaluate tradeoffs, and choose elegant solutions. You think critically about whether it's the right approach, not just how to implement it.
Proactive ownership & independence – You don't wait for tickets or detailed specs. You identify gaps, raise concerns early, propose solutions, and drive work forward autonomously.
Clear communication – You translate between technical depth and business context. You keep teams aligned, document decisions, and explain complex systems clearly.
Pragmatic execution – You balance quality with speed, shipping iteratively while maintaining high standards.
