Why Data & Analytics at AMBOSS?

Join a high-trust, cross-functional team where data sits at the heart of every product decision, commercial bet and operational process. You will work side-by-side with our Analytics team, Product, Engineering, Commercial, Medical and Operations colleagues to turn a modern, cloud-native stack (GCP/AWS, BigQuery, Airflow, Airbyte, dbt, Looker, Mixpanel, Claude Code) plus a growing set of integrations and internal tools into reliable insights that move the business forward. Your work will guide decisions that reach medical students and clinicians worldwide, directly advancing our mission to enable all medical professionals to provide the best possible care.

Role Overview

As a Junior Data Engineer you will help build the data platform that powers AMBOSS. You will work on real production pipelines, dbt models and integrations from your first week, with the support of senior engineers and the Data Platform Lead. The role is broader than a classic data engineering position: beyond pipelines and warehouse work, the team also owns integrations to our ERP and other core business systems and builds small services and internal tools that solve specific business problems. One current example is our master data management service for medical institutions around the world.

In return, you'll be mentored by experienced engineers and colleagues, work on a modern production stack from day one and enter your second year at AMBOSS with a diverse and highly valuable skill set.

You will:

  • Build and maintain pipelines for our data platform: dbt models, Airflow DAGs, Airbyte connectors, BigQuery transformations. You will ship to production, not just to a sandbox.

  • Contribute to integrations and internal services. Help connect our ERP and other business systems to the platform and contribute code to internal services like our master data management tool.

  • Partner with Analysts and Data Scientists to make the platform something they can self-serve from with confidence. Their problems are your problems.

  • Use AI with judgment. Use AI to boost productivity and develop the judgment to know when to trust the output and when to throw it out. Expect the way you work to look meaningfully different six months from now.

  • Work hands-on with senior engineers. Pair on hard problems, get your code reviewed, give code reviews back and grow fast through the loop.

  • Learn the business. Sit in stakeholder conversations and understand why a request matters before you build for it.

  • Raise the bar on quality. Write tests, add documentation, set up observability and treat the small things as part of the job rather than someone else's problem.

  • Stay tool-agnostic. Be curious about new tools and frameworks but build the discipline to choose based on evidence rather than novelty.

You bring:

  • Endless curiosity and a questioning mindset about both code and business.

  • Comfort with AI tools (Claude or similar) and an instinct to reach for them rather than around them.

  • Strong communication skills in English. German is a plus.

  • Up to 1 year of previous work experience (internships, side projects or academic work all count). Plus points for previous work experience in data engineering, software engineering or a closely related field.

  • Not expected, but a plus:

    • SQL fundamentals: writing joins, window functions and CTEs.

    • Working Python skills: building a small data tool or script end-to-end.

    • Exposure to cloud (GCP, AWS or similar) and modern data tooling (dbt, Airflow or similar).

    • Any exposure to CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, vector databases or integrating with business systems like ERP, Shop or Bank integrations.

You Enjoy:

  • Starting from the why, not the code. You'd rather understand what a system needs to do and why than rush to write the cleanest possible implementation of the wrong thing. When you receive a ticket, your instinct is to ask "what is this for?" before deciding how to build it.

  • Connecting the dots. You instinctively place a piece of code in the bigger system, both technically and on the business side. You're suspicious of changes that solve the narrow problem but ignore the surrounding pipeline, schema or stakeholder.

  • Learning fast in an unstructured environment. You're comfortable being slightly out of your depth, across new tools, new domains and new parts of the stack. You navigate ambiguity without waiting to be handed a clean brief. You'd rather try and be wrong than wait until you're sure.

  • Questioning everything, including yourself. You instinctively look for the line between assumptions and proven facts. You sanity-check your own code before someone else has to. You flag uncertainty rather than letting it ship.

  • Building for the next person, including future-you. You think past the immediate deliverable to whoever will use, extend or maintain the code next. You'd rather invest in a solid foundation today than ship a shortcut that creates more work down the line. Hard life now, easy life later.

  • Working openly with others. You value direct feedback in both directions and you ask for help before you've been stuck for too long.
